The practical things to look for, and the questions worth asking, before you sign anything. By Kellie Lee Stewart, Founder.
Choose an agency that is clear about your goals, honest about what it can deliver and transparent in its reporting. Look for relevant experience, real examples of results and plain-English explanations. Be wary of guaranteed rankings, long lock-in contracts and reports full of vanity metrics.
Choosing a digital marketing agency is one of the more important decisions a growing business makes. The right partner brings clarity and a steady flow of enquiries. The wrong one spends your budget on activity that never adds up to anything. Many agencies list similar services, so it helps to know what actually separates them.
Before you compare anyone, decide what you want. More enquiries? Better visibility in search? A new product launch? Different goals call for different skills and channels. A good agency will want to discuss your objectives in detail before recommending anything, instead of sending the same package to everyone.
A full-service agency may cover search engine optimisation, pay-per-click advertising, social media, content, email, web design and reporting. You do not necessarily need all of them. A good agency will be honest about which channels will deliver the best return for your goals and budget rather than upselling services that will not make a difference.

Look at case studies, client testimonials, online reviews and any relevant certifications. Pay attention to how clearly they explain their strategy, timelines and what they expect to happen. A trustworthy agency will not promise guaranteed rankings or overnight results, because search engines and markets change constantly. They should set realistic expectations and be able to explain their reasoning in plain language.
Costs depend on the services, the scope of work, the size of your business and the agency’s experience. Be careful when comparing price lists, because two quotes that look similar can include very different amounts of work. A better approach is to ask each agency for a proposal tailored to your business and compare what is actually included. For reference, our own pricing is published: Google Ads management starts from A$990, £495 or €550 a month, and Facebook and Instagram ads from A$890, £445 or €495 a month, all excluding tax.
That last question is worth asking. Automation can be helpful, but we never recommend leaving an ad account to run without someone looking at it. Ours are checked by a person every week.
Once you have a shortlist, arrange a call with each agency. Notice how they communicate and whether they listen. The agency you choose effectively becomes an extension of your team, so working style and trust matter as much as technical skill.
If you would like to see how we approach this, you can start with our paid audit, which gives you an honest review of your current marketing before you commit to anything. We have also published guidance for agencies and businesses on choosing a partner.
