PPC trends for startups: what has held up and what was hype

A few years ago we wrote about the technologies expected to shape PPC for startups. Here is a look back at which ideas stuck and what to focus on now. By Kellie Lee Stewart, Founder.

The PPC trends that have genuinely mattered for startups are automation and machine learning inside the ad platforms, video and social advertising, and better measurement, while ideas such as blockchain advertising and AR ads have stayed niche. The best approach is to use new tools where they help, but keep a person responsible for the account.

Looking back at the trend lists

Every year brings a fresh list of technologies that are supposed to transform pay-per-click advertising. We published one for startups a few years ago, and it is worth being honest about how it held up. Some ideas became part of everyday ad management. Others never really arrived.

The useful question for a startup is not “what is new?” but “what will help me get enquiries or sales from a limited budget?” Here is how we would sort the old list today.

Trends that have genuinely held up

Automation and machine learning

The ad platforms now use machine learning for bidding, audience matching and even suggested ad copy. Used well, this saves time and can improve results, because the system can respond to signals no person could track by hand.

The catch is that automation is only as good as the information you give it. It needs accurate conversion tracking, sensible goals and clear boundaries. We never recommend a set-and-forget account. A person should check every account each week, look at the search terms, and step in when something drifts. Our piece on how AI is changing PPC goes into this in more detail.

Video and social advertising

Video has become a normal part of paid advertising, and social platforms such as Facebook and Instagram offer strong targeting and clear reporting. For a startup that is still building awareness, short, honest video often works well alongside search ads. Our Facebook and Instagram ads service is built for this.

Better measurement

The most valuable change for small advertisers has been measurement. Knowing which keywords, ads and pages lead to real enquiries, not only clicks, changes how you spend. Track cost per click and click-through rate, but judge the campaign by conversions and the cost of each one.

Trends that were mostly hype

Several technologies from the old list have stayed on the sidelines for most small advertisers:

  • Augmented and virtual reality ads. Interesting in a handful of retail cases, but not a practical priority for a startup.
  • Blockchain advertising. The promise of a more transparent ad ecosystem has not reached everyday campaign management.
  • Chatbots as an ad tactic. Useful for customer service on your site, but rarely the thing that makes a campaign succeed.

Voice search is a similar story. It changed how some people ask questions, but it has not created a separate PPC channel that small businesses need to chase.

What to focus on instead

For a startup, a handful of basics make most of the difference:

  1. Clear conversion tracking. Set up calls, forms and bookings so you know what is working.
  2. Tight keyword and location targeting. Reach the people who might actually buy, and add negative keywords early to cut waste.
  3. A landing page that matches the ad. The page should say what the ad promised and make the next step obvious.
  4. Regular human review. Check search terms, budgets and results every week.
  5. A realistic budget and patience. Give campaigns time to gather data before making big changes.

How to keep up without chasing every trend

You do not need to attend every event or follow every commentator. A simple routine is enough:

  • Read the official Google Ads and Meta announcements for changes that affect your account
  • Test one new idea at a time, and keep notes on what happened
  • Ask the person managing your ads what they are testing and why
  • Review results against your goals every month

Testing is the real advantage. A small, careful experiment tells you far more about your own business than any trend report.

Getting help

If you would like a second opinion on an existing account, our paid audit reviews what is working and what is wasting money. If you are starting from scratch, our Google Ads management starts from A$990 / £495 / €550 a month, with no GST, VAT or IVA added, with a real person checking your account every week.
