Both bring in enquiries, but they work in very different ways. Here is how we help businesses decide. By Kellie Lee Stewart, Founder.
Google Ads usually brings enquiries faster, while SEO builds slower but compounds over time, and many businesses do best using both. If you need leads in weeks, start with Google Ads. If you can wait and want lasting visibility, invest in SEO, ideally alongside a small ads budget.
This is one of the questions we are asked most often, and the honest answer is that it depends on your goals, your timeline and your market. Here is how we compare the two.
SEO improves your website and your online presence so that you appear in the unpaid results when people search. It takes time, but pages that rank can keep bringing visitors without paying for each click.
Google Ads places your adverts at the top of the results for the searches you choose. You pay when someone clicks, and the traffic stops when you stop paying.
Google Ads can start sending visitors within days of launching. SEO typically takes months before you see meaningful movement, longer in competitive areas. If you need enquiries quickly, ads are the more realistic route.
With ads, you pay for each visit, so cost rises as competition rises. With SEO, you invest in the work upfront and the benefits tend to carry on. Over a long enough period, SEO often costs less per enquiry, but it is not free and it is not guaranteed. A page can take time to rank and rankings can change.
For reference, Google Ads management from us starts at A$990 / £495 / €550 a month, with no GST, VAT or IVA added, plus your own ad spend paid directly to Google. Local SEO and AI search starts from A$1,100 / £595 / €650 a month.
Ads give you precise control. You choose the search terms, the area, the budget and the message, and you can pause or change them at any time. SEO is less direct, because you influence results rather than control them.
Many people scroll past adverts and prefer organic results, while others click the first result without a second thought. In practice, appearing in both places gives you more presence and more credibility.
Our client K2 Car Removal went from 126 to 266 Google Ads leads a quarter, comparing July to September 2025 with the same period in 2026. That came from careful account management, good landing pages and accurate tracking, not from simply spending more. It shows what a well-run ads account can do when someone is actually paying attention to it.
A caution on automation. We never recommend a set-and-forget ads account. A real person should check performance, search terms and spend every week, and that is how we run ours.
If you are not sure where to begin, a paid audit will show you what is working and where the gaps are. You can also learn more about Google Ads management and SEO and AI search, or work out what leads might cost with our lead cost calculator.
